Thanks for another in depth analysis! 👍
You can't tell a miracle worker like Captain Scott how he should dress
😂 what was he the captain of "engineering" Captain Kirk says take us to Warp, Captain Scott says no separate the saucer
This is so interesting!!! Thanks for being so detailed!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. :)
23:22 My guess was that the 171 represented the length of the jumpsuit in centimeters, but that's nearly how tall Diane Crosby is (5'8"/1.73 cm). So your theory on it pertaining to a TV production code is most likely.

Thank you so much! Where can I find your sewing tutorials?
I've develope a soft spot for early TNG uniform over the years, I even thinking of getting my own one.
Robert Fletcher did what the directors told him to do. William weir theiss was not slighted. He also did what the creators told him to do.dont try to create drama
Thank you for making this. I am a beginner and I still jumped immediately to an intermediate-level pattern. Specifically, the jumpsuits from Star Trek: Enterprise from badwolfcostumes. Tutorials like this are so helpful, and I wish you the best.
Lost Era uniforms are without a doubt the best looking ones
Niche is not pronounced Nich... pronounced neesh. Great video!!!
@19:40ms I'd imagine it was the 'away jacket' rarely seen in the typically formal missions
this was good and intresting tutorial i wold really like to have a star trek TNG uniform but i want only the top part.

I tend to disregard just about everything negative Roddenberry has against the continued success his creation gained from other's contributions without his detrimental influence, which I view as nothing more than pathetic petty butthurt. I absolutely love the movie uniforms as they look professional and I don't mind the military feel to them because Starfleet IS a military organization and was ALWAYS portrayed as such in the original series, despite Roddenberry's hypocrite protests to the contrary. While I don't care for the motives behind the designs of the original TNG uniforms, I don't think they're that bad looking; but I do feel that you have to take into account the comfort levels of the actors when designing these costumes. in that regards, these uniforms fail. The uniform style of Season 3 and beyond by Blackman is just right. Comfort and Professionalism rolled into one. In regard to the Lost Era: If the budget wasn't an issue, I honestly would have preferred a completely different style uniform design that bridges the looks between Justman's movie era and Theiss' early TNG years. Hell, Modern Star Trek at the end of the 24th/beginning of the 25th century seems to have a ridiculously wide variety of new uniforms just about every year.
Thanks for the updated sewing tutorial on these uniforms and all the hard work you put into them. Do you have information on the dress uniforms? Also the gray-yoked uniforms seen in the last three TNG feature films and from S5-7 of DS9?
Will def be purchasing this and making mock ups over and over to learn. Can’t imagine a better guide as a beginner. Whenever you get around to the Nemesis/DS9 women’s uniforms, I’ll be first in line to buy a pattern. Finding resources for women’s uniforms has proved to be a pain, so thank you so much for all you do!
one note. it wouldn't have made sense for them to put Scotty in a then-current uniform as he had officially retired from Starfleet before boarding the ill-fatted ship they found him on and didn't seriously consider returning to active service until the end of the episode.
I understand why Gene hated the military style and the conflict with his vision of humanity's future. however no dispute that th WOK uniforms are sharp as all hell and Star Trek's federation still us the ranking system of their ancestors also IMHO command the respect and admiration a starfleet officer deserves.
Awesome stuff, these are hectic! Super basic question, I’m just wondering if this pattern includes the baggier 2 piece Season 3 jumpsuits?
The pattern does include the later jumpsuit styles, but the sizing is the same for all versions. The fit is mostly skin-tight, although one can let it out to emulate some of the baggier fits if desired. :)
Any chance that you have the information on ds9 and first contact uniforms?
Hehe, any uniforms worn for DAILY work should be very practical and equally comfortable, long lasting, easy to maintain within specified standards, and still formal. Very few, if any ST-uniforms fulfill such criteria. Especially extremely tight-fitting (and revealing) spandex uniforms are just silly. Yes, TV is TV, but IMO these iconic (but still useless) uniforms and the total lack of mission prepping has not aged well. I guess, the uniforms of the future will be variants of the themes almost all military and uniformed civilian units all over the world has adopted for daily use the last decades. Most often a comfortable, plain and unitary design with muted rank insignia. In think these are to some extent based on certain WWII uniforms, especially the US M1941 field/combat variants. The Americans ditched traditional style for pragmatic practicality - and it worked. The Enterprise series took some clues here, as well as from modern military aviation equipment, but this was only to show that this series was closer to us, time wise.
I think you can safely ignore anything worn by a Starfleet Admiral where canon is concerned. In the US military, flag officers (Admirals and Generals) aren't bound by uniform regulations in the same way that lower ranks are. They frequently modify and tailor their dress uniforms in various non-regulation ways. Douglas MacArthur and George Patton are famous for embellishing, Ulysses Grant and Dwight Eisenhower, for downplaying.
In the U.S. Navy, for third class petty officers and up, personnel with less than twelve years of service wear rate insignia on their service dress blues with red chevrons and rockers, whereas personnel with greater than twelve years of service and good conduct wear gold chevrons and rockers (those without good conduct are relegated to red). That may have informed the decision in Star Trek Generations to have red on the monster maroons' department-colored arm straps for junior personnel like Demora Sulu and Tuvok, and gold for senior personnel like Kirk, Scotty, Chekov, and Harriman. All of the examples you show are all ensigns or lieutenant junior grades, which would be junior personnel.
TNG’s uniforms I never liked. Don’t get me wrong I liked TNG series, the flaw was the uniforms.
For my geeky ST- and details-obsessed brain this video is absolutely amazing ❤
Fascinating.
Yesterday's Enterprise... C.
I’m so glad that these weren’t the standard Uniform for The Next Generation. I’d be humiliated to wear one of those as a Guy. I love those Burgundy Jackets with White Color and Black Pants that the TOS Wore in nearly every movie they were in.
MY BEEF: changing the gold/blue/red colors of TOS to whatever the hell was going on in TNG.
It would have made way more sense if there had actually been a lost-era uniform that bridged the gap between the TOS-era movies and TNG, but maybe it was difficult to justify the cost of designing and producing an entirely new set of uniforms for just one episode (not counting All Good Things). But given that the TOS-era movie uniforms were used for something like three quarters of a century, it's odd how quickly the uniforms change in the post TNG era. It's almost like Nike became the official supplier of Starfleet ;)
WHEN was this admiral's uniform shown @18:00 ?! I watched this several times, and it looks like it was in an episode, but place before TNG, bu with no supporting info, can't find it. THIS should have been the TNG uniform.
Whenever noting someting obscure, it helps if the episode or book is referenced. this uniform is very cool !
After too much Googling, it is from the Voyager episode "Coda", of Vice Admiral Janway, Captain Janeway's father.
Correct, it's from the VOY season 3 episode, "Coda." I did cite the episode in the corresponding blog post and try to usually verbally specify in the videos but that one slipped past, sorry!
One thing Trek could learn from another show B5, JMS had a few demands on uniforms. Pockets for stuff that the pjs lacked and layered pieces suitable for different conditions exspecially later with crusade with an explorer crew. Arms came off and over coat/vest depending on temps.
The Monster Maroon uniforms are the best uniforms from Star Trek.
A nice bit of fan theory would be that the TNG-era uniforms were issued as part of the 200th Frontier Day celebration in 2351. That would have warranted such a significant and radical design change.
Love Next Gen is my favorite Star Trek but those season 1 and 2 were not very good I understand George vision but he made many mistakes that cost money
Personally prefer the 23rd century Star Fleet from Star Trek 2 they have a more elegant and more military look
I love the Star Trek minidress! I think the single-leg wrap mechanism looks innovative! You should make a new updated video now that Junkball has featured you!
Brooch and Broach. 2 different words with different meanings but sound the same. Just like if you polish a car but would get slapped if you pronounced it the same when talking about ordering a Polish sausage.
So cute.
I'm not sure why Picard has command white as an ensign in those episodes. He should have a department color grey, or mustard. If not that then red for cadet officer, or jr command track officer. Like Savak in WoK. However Savak did not have a grey science department uniform in Search for Spock. Picard also has a mismatch coat. A mustard inner lining instead of white to match his strap, and undershirt. Could be an error, or what was available. Later on you see other officers in white. I assume the woman wearing command white behind Kelsey Grammer is his XO. Maybe an in universe explanation is the XO roll was detached from being a department head. Freeing them up to go wear needed instead of run a department. The undershirt changed due to the collar I'm sure. I remember reading an article about the making of the uniforms for later films. The turtle necks puffy ribbed style was made with a machine that injected air into the collar. They were down to one needle by the end. I think the T shirt underneath was a quick fix for running out of usable turtleneck undershirts.
You have done a great job. Thank you for all the work you have put into this video.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
Unstructured spandex? The actors complained of muscle fatigue during the first season due to the tight (and unflattering) nature of the fabric. (And Roddenberry sizing the costumes smaller to remove wrinkles.) This was corrected with the B customers made of wool.
"Unstructured" in the sense that they lacked most conventional tailoring techniques like interfacing, chest padding, sleeve heads, waistbands, etc. Except for the shoulder pads, they were literally just skin-tight spandex jumpsuits (as opposed to Fletcher's TWOK-era uniform designs, which were traditionally structured and tailored).
The information I didn't know I absolutely needed until just now
Real Men dont wear dresses.
Thank god they got rid of those male uniform skirts. That was really far left wing
The TNG Enterprise interior looked like a hotel. TNG uniforms looked like hotel bell hops.
Can I book a reservation? I'd love to stay there!
@@ObsessiveCostumingDude I suspect that the Enterprise smells like a hotel. A good place for the ships hooker (counselor).
I cant believe they put males in skirts on star trek. Im glad those didnt last very long!
They had enlisted crew on Star Trek?
Depends on the era. ;)
